As Tall As Lions, Bear Hands, & Rachel Goodrich

As Tall As Lions - State Theatre in St. Petersburg, FL - May 2, 2010
I first saw As Tall As Lions open up for Mutemath at HoB Orlando and was really impressed. When I saw they were coming to St. Pete on their first headlining tour, I jumped at the chance to shoot the show.
This was a show that was full of surprises. When I showed up, there were around 50 people there (surprise #1), so it was easily the smallest show I’d ever been to at the State. But that also meant it was easy for me to move around to get different angles (there’s never a photo pit at this venue), so kind of a win for me.

First up was Rachel Goodrich, a “shakeabilly” musician out of Miami, and her band of muppets. Wasn’t really sure what to expect when I saw them take the stage and pick up a wide variety of instruments (the typical stuff, guitar, bass, and drums, all the way to a kazoo, trombone, accordion, and other random stuff). This was a very pleasant surprise (#2) for me as I always enjoy discovering unique new artists.

I was digging on this guitar.

This guy is playing a tambourine, which was one of the various instruments Rachel tossed into the crowd so they could play along.

You seriously need to watch this video for Rachel’s song “Light Bulb.” If it doesn’t make you smile, there’s something wrong with you.
Next up was Bear Hands, an indie rock band out of Brooklyn.

I don’t know much about guitars or playing, but this Ted Feldman guy kind of reminded me of The Edge with an indie bent. Might just be me though.
And, lastly, As Tall As Lions took the stage.

And, surprise #3, my buddy Brooks Potteiger was there!

ATAL put on a great show, even after the crowd started bringing them shots during their performance :-)
