Imogen Heap performs at House of Blues in Orlando, Florida on June 1, 2010

This was a fun, but challenging, show to shoot. The difficult thing about this particular House of Blues is that the stage is right around (if not a little more than) six feet high.  This means you’re basically shooting up the artists’ noses all night, which tends to not be the most flattering angle.

But I was able to shoot across the stage (by standing on the right side of the pit and shooting the left side of the stage, and vice versa) to try and get slightly more flattering angles.

It was a full night of English entertainment, which was kicked off by Ben Christophers.

I was a little late to the show, so he was already playing when I came in. I got into the pit as quickly as I could and was able to shoot for one song.

Then Imogen came out to introduce the next band…

…experimental (and mostly instrumental) band Geese, comprised of Emma Smith and Vincent Sipprell.

The key in this set was basically to play around with different settings as the lights changed. Their music is quite interesting. As you can see in the last image, they sing into their instruments to get different effects and sounds. Pretty cool, though also pretty short, set.

And now the main act of the evening, Imogen Heap.

Have I ever told you I’m sort of addicted to the 14-24 lens? :)

Imogen was a challenge to shoot because she’s constantly moving around the stage and picking up different instruments. If you notice in that first shot, she has wires running along her arms that serve some sort of musical purpose. Then there’s this thing that she swings around to make some sort of sound…

And who doesn’t love a good hand saw riff?

Of course, I wish I would have been allowed to shoot more than the first three songs, because she had some really cool stuff going on on stage later in the show. But all in all, a great show!
